The Challenge of Four-Level English Listening Tests
Part I: Overview of Cet-4 Listening Test
The Cet-4 English listening test is a challenge that many Chinese students face during their studies. The test aims to measure a student's ability to understand spoken English in academic and social contexts. It consists of three sections: Short Conversations, Long Conversations, and Lectures, with a duration of approximately 40 minutes. Each section has ten questions, involving multiple choice, sentence completion, and true/false forms. The test is conducted through headphones, and the listening is followed by a ten-minute break before moving on to the other parts of the exam.Part II: Difficulties in Cet-4 Listening Test
For many Chinese students, listening tends to be the most challenging part of learning English. This is due to various reasons, such as unfamiliarity with spoken language rhythm, poor vocabulary, and insufficient exposure to foreign accents. Moreover, the Cet-4 listening test is designed to have a higher level of difficulty than previous language tests. The conversations and lectures in the test are often sophisticated, conveying abstract or complex topics, such as ecological problems, sociological phenomena, or literary criticism. Students are required not only to comprehend what the speakers are saying, but also to infer the underlying meanings, identify relationships between various items, and deduce the speaker's intentions or attitudes.Part III: Strategies to Improve Listening Skills
