Reflection on Teaching High School English
Introduction
Teaching high school English is a great responsibility, as it shapes students' reading and writing skills, their analytical thinking and their overall understanding of the language. Yet, as a teacher, I have encountered several challenges that have caused me to rethink my teaching methods, and evaluate my delivery of lessons. In this reflection, I will highlight three main areas that I believe require attention and improvement: classroom management, lesson planning, and student engagement.Classroom Management
One of the greatest challenges I have faced as a high school English teacher is managing the classroom. Keeping students engaged and focused in each lesson is essential for their academic growth, but it can be difficult to achieve, especially with large classes. The first issue I encountered was the lack of discipline in the classroom. Some students would constantly interrupt others, making it difficult for anyone to focus on the lesson. I realized that I was not providing clear expectations for my students, nor was I reinforcing them. Additionally, I noticed that I was not using positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior, instead, I was focusing too much on punishment which was proving to be ineffective. To address these issues, I developed a class agreement with the students which established clear expectations for behavior and consequences for non-compliance. I also started to reinforce positive behavior by praising students who displayed good behavior during class. As a result, the classroom became more organized and focused, and this led to better academic performance among students.Lesson Planning
Student Engagement
The final area that required improvement was student engagement. As a teacher, I found it necessary to ensure that students are actively involved in their learning, rather than just being passive recipients of knowledge. To achieve this, I started incorporating a range of activities such as debates, group discussions, and role-playing exercises to stimulate interest and promote critical thinking. I also ensured that the lessons contain a balance of theoretical and practical applications of concepts learned. Furthermore, I frequently asked for feedback from students on their learning experience, making sure to listen and act on their input. As a result, students have reported that they enjoy the interactive lessons and learn better when they are actively involved. Conclusion
